Location

When thinking of possible locations to shoot our film, I suggested we try Ashley Road as I live locally and I believed that the area would be perfect for encapsulating homelessness due to its run down appearance. My vision was to have Matt busking outside the shops whilst the members of the public walk by, I believed this would be effective at creating a sense of realism as theres often a lack of civillians in short amateur films. When reporting back to the group of the location I thought of my other group members approved. I then went down Ashley Road one evening and took pictures of all the areas that I believed would be suitable for including in our short film. I found the areas where he could busk, walk down (the alleyway) to his eventual sleeping spot. I took the pictures in the evening so it would give the other members of the group an actual representation of the area during the scenes where we would shoot at night, they all liked the idea so we were set on this area to shoot our film on the day. I thought the alleyway looked perfect as it was damp and covered in graffiti, as well as the sleeping spot being sucluded, giving it a low possibility of people interrupting our filming.

Matt

When finding our lead actor we were aware of Matt Lay being cast in a production last year as well as him being a close friend to Joe. We asked Joe to contact him and ask if he would be available. We believed Matt fit our aims of what we wanted our main character to look like, and Matt's experience in acting made, luckily he was willing to be involved in our project so we cast him as our lead. When finding costume for Matt we simply asked if he had anything suitable for a homeless person, to which he sent us this photo, he approved of his appearance and we were set. All I had to do was give him the black beanie and we believed he made a very convincing homeless guy.

Ethan

We casted Joe's younger brother Ethan as our antagonist as we needed to find a role very quickly and we believed he looked the part; he also had some acting experience having taken GCSE drama. We thought his long hair and unshaved appearance was ideal for what he wanted our villain to look like. We bought him a jacket from a local charity shop and Jordan put it in the compost bin so it would get dirty as well as smearing stains all over it.

When deciding to cast Matt and Ethan, we looked heavily towards stereotypes. These influenced our decision especially when casting Ethan as he had long hair that looked a bit scruffy and had not shaved for some time, this is stereotypical of a homeless person as they would not have the money to get a hair cut and would not have the provisions to be able to shave. We also wanted Ethan to look more intimidating than Matt as audiences would sympathise more with Matt and dislike Ethan when he began to steal Matt's belongings. In terms of clothing we went again with the typical look, most of the time homeless people are wearing tracksuits and have dirty jackets and clothing as they wouldn't be able to clean them, another typical thing for them to wear is a wooly hat (beanie) so we made sure both our cast members had these items along with a pair of worn out gloves. They idea was to create a cast that looked as realistic as possible, and we believed that the best way to do this was to follow stereotypes heavily associated the homeless.
