Similarly to last year, we created a questionnaire for an audience to fill out.
From the results gathered we would then look at the feedback and as a group decided what important aspects we want included in our film or what to focus on. Such as what genre our short film will be or whether we want dialogue or music played over the top as short films often range on this particular aspect.
It also helped up discover what the audience focus on the most in a film and what they consider the most important aspects so when it comes to making our film, we would ensure a particular aspect was focussed on more than others, such as costume or location.

Q1 - Largely due to our questionnaire having been posted on social media, the majority of the answers were from the 12-17 age range. From this we decided as a group to make this our target audience, also fitting into the 12/12A film rating we were making our short film. It makes sense to base it on this age group as we can then use the feedback to influence what our film includes.

Q3 - From the results there was a clear indication that comedy was the preferred genre for a film, however, we decided not to create a comedy which would appeal to the majority of the audience as we personally believed it would be difficult to create an entertaining comedy film within 5 minutes as well as containing humourous material in our film. Therefore as a group we decided to do a drama short as this allows us the opportunity to create an interesting storyline and focus on realism in our short film, however this decision meant that our film would be more suited for a niche audience.

Q4 - The majority of the audience watch 1-4 films a month allowing us a great opportunity to attract an audience, due to its short run time our film would potentially be watched by a large audience as it will not take up a large amount of time compared to a film with a longer running time.

Q5 - This result was reassuring for us, as the majority of answers were 'yes' to whether they watch a 5 minute film, this meant there was a higher possibility that our film would be watched, this also meant that people do watch short films although they are commonly associated with a niche audience.

Q6 - The main answers and points taken from this question were:

  • The point is put across quickly

  • They can portray a valuable message without having to sit through two hours of film

  • Use time efficiently to tell a creative and interesting storyline

  • Keeps the viewers attention

  • Don't need much concentration when you don't have much time, they are a good quick watch

As a group we would ensure that these points would be taken into consideration so that we would listen to our audience and try to please them and give them what they would like in a short film. With this in mind, the answers we were given were points we personally believed and would instinctively try and ensure we achieved.

(Those who said they haven't seen one was because they didn't know they existed, however they would watch one)

Q7 - The results we received give a clear indication that characters, location and music are the most important aspects of a film to our audience. Therefore we will ensure we focus on getting all of these aspects right, and that they all link together to make a successful short film, if we did not take these aspects into major consideration our audience would not be satisfied.

Q8 - The main points we took away from this question were:

  • Snappy storyline that is to the point

  • Focus on the main characters, not too many characters

  • Good script (if used)

  • Making efficient use of the small amount of time

  • Music that fits with the storyline

  • Good simple structure not too complicated

  • Tension and excitement

  • Quality of characterisation

As a group we would again take these opinions into consideration, most particularly when focussing on the characters and storyline, therefore deciding that we would only have a small amount of characters to ensure that they are given correct treatment and characterisation that the audience would find believable and realistic, resulting in perhaps them rooting for our protagonist and disliking our antagonist (which would be successful). We would want our audience to find our plotline compelling and be invested in our storyline and in order for this to be possible we would need a solid script and soundtrack.

Q9 - Although it is common for short films to contain only non-diegetic sound as opposed to dialogue, our audience preferred short films with dialogue, as a group we personally preferred this as we find films with diegetic sound and dialogue more realistic and interesting, therefore in our final production we would ensure we contained dialogue and a script.

Q10 - For our final question there was a 3 way split, however, the traditional happy ending was the majority, due to our film being a drama we would perhaps take this into consideration, however this would not be a certainty as drama's often end tragically, which we may want to do with our final film.
